Local Pickup Support in Order Screening API and Validation Rules

2 min read

Local Pickup

Local pickup allows customers to collect their online purchases directly from a merchant’s physical store or designated collection point instead of having the items shipped to their addresses. Since local pickup orders do not require delivery to the customer’s address, merchants may not need to perform shipping address verification during the order screening process.

FraudLabs Pro introduces support for Local Pickup in the Order Screening API, along with two new validation rules. These enhancements help merchants to handle local pickup orders more accurately and configure fraud detection rules according to their shipping methods.

What Is Local Pickup #

Local pickup is a fulfillment method that allows customers to place orders online and collect their purchases from a physical location. Unlike standard delivery, this method does not require merchants to ship products to the customer’s shipping address. For example, a customer may purchase a product through an online store and select local pickup at checkout. The customer then visits the store to collect the item when it is ready.

Because the merchant does not deliver the order to the customer’s address, shipping address verification may not be necessary for these transactions. Applying the same shipping address checks to local pickup and standard delivery orders could result in unnecessary verification or review. With Local Pickup support in FraudLabs Pro, merchants can identify the selected shipping method and apply appropriate fraud screening procedures.

Local Pickup Support in the Order Screening API #

The FraudLabs Pro Order Screening API now supports a new parameter named ship_method. This parameter allows merchants to specify the shipping method selected for an order.

The ship_method parameter supports the following two values:

  • standard_delivery: Indicates that the order will be delivered to the customer’s shipping address.
  • local_pickup: Indicates that the customer will collect the order from a store or designated pickup location.

When the ship_method parameter is set to local_pickup, the Order Screening API will skip shipping address checking. This behavior accommodates orders that do not require delivery to the customer’s address. For standard delivery orders, merchants can specify standard_delivery to identify the order as a regular shipping transaction.

Merchants should pass the appropriate value according to the shipping method selected during checkout. Using the parameter correctly helps FraudLabs Pro to process orders according to their fulfillment requirements.

New Shipping Method Validation Rules #

In addition to the API enhancement, FraudLabs Pro introduces two new validation rules that allow merchants to configure fraud screening based on the selected shipping method.

  • Shipping Method Equal / Not Equal to Standard Delivery
Shipping Method Equal to Standard Delivery Validation Rule configuration

This rule allows merchants to determine whether an order uses standard delivery. Merchants can configure the rule to match or exclude orders identified as standard_delivery. For example, a merchant may configure a rule to flag standard delivery orders for review when additional verification is required. Alternatively, the merchant may use the rule to apply specific screening conditions to orders that do not use standard delivery.

  • Shipping Method Equal / Not Equal to Local Pickup
Shipping Method Equal to Local Pickup Validation Rule configuration

This rule allows merchants to determine whether an order uses local pickup. Merchants can configure the rule to match or exclude orders identified as local_pickup. For example, a merchant may configure a rule to approve eligible local pickup orders or apply additional checks to these transactions, depending on the store’s fraud prevention policies.

Both rules give merchants greater flexibility in managing orders according to their fulfillment methods. The two new validation rules are available to FraudLabs Pro Small Plan subscribers and above.

Conclusion #

Local Pickup support in FraudLabs Pro helps merchants to accommodate orders that customers collect in person. By introducing the ship_method parameter in the Order Screening API and two new shipping method validation rules, FraudLabs Pro provides greater flexibility in handling different fulfillment methods.

Merchants can specify standard_delivery or local_pickup when screening orders and use the new validation rules to customize their fraud detection workflows. These enhancements are available to FraudLabs Pro Small Plan subscribers and above, helping eligible merchants to manage local pickup transactions more efficiently while maintaining effective fraud prevention.
